Styrene (urine)

Urinary mandelic acid in end-of shift samples is a well-established monitoring technique for styrene exposure. Urine samples should be collected at the end of shift, but not on the first day of work.

Note any concurrent alcohol consumption, which can impact excretion. Absorption of styrene can be increased significantly with increased respiration due to physical activity. Co-exposure to ethylbenzene should be noted as it also gives rise to mandelic acid in urine.

A poster illustrating our data on styrene exposure is available.
