NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Managing Stress at Work

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and NEBOSH have jointly developed a new one-day qualification aimed at helping you and your organisation reduce one of the biggest causes of work-related ill health; stress.

Statistics published by HSE covering the 2020/21 period, show of the 1.7 million workers suffering from a work-related illness, 822,000 were due to stress, depression or anxiety and a  report by the global management consultancy firm Deloitte estimates that the total annual cost of poor mental health to employers has increased by 25% since 2019, costing UK employers up to £56 billion a year.

The moral and financial case to take action to reduce cases of work-related stress has never been so compelling, but employers also have a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work by doing a risk assessment and acting on it.

However many who are tasked with managing work-related stress do not understand their legal obligations, know what to do or where to start.

Recognising this issue, HSE has collaborated with NEBOSH to develop a new one-day qualification to give organisations a solid foundation from which to work.

The course aims to identify and reduce workplace stressors in order to create a positive, healthier workplace.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the six key areas of work design which can cause stress
  • Know how to establish a framework to manage and address stress in your workplace
  • Understand how to identify early warning signs and provide support to individuals
  • Know about strategic interventions that address the root causes of stress in your organisation.

The course will cover

The key principles of work-related stress and its relationship to mental ill health issues, how to recognise the causes and effects of workplace stress, and the responsibilities of employers and individual roles in managing workplace stress. You will examine how to apply the HSE's Management Standards approach to assess stress risks in the workplace, how to develop suitable interventions to address stressors, reduce negative impacts, and manage the effects of stress in the workplace. You will look at ways to continually improve your organisation and create a great place to work.

The qualification is suitable for anyone responsible for employee wellbeing or managing workplace stress, including health and safety professionals, human resource professionals, line managers and supervisors and occupational health professionals.

How is the qualification assessed?

A multiple-choice assessment is completed at the end of the course. You will be presented with a realistic workplace scenario and will answer multiple-choice questions focussed on the principles learnt throughout the course.

Our live online training courses are taught in real-time, allowing you to have a direct dialogue with our experts, a high level of interaction with the other attendees and lots of opportunities to ask questions - just as you would in a real classroom.

All you will need is an internet-connected computer, laptop or tablet with a webcam and microphone. Before you book, you can check that you meet the  Zoom system requirements and run a diagnostic test to ensure the software is compatible with your firewall settings.
