To achieve its emission reduction target in 2050 the UK energy system is going through a number of changes. Therefore, introducing innovative and safe energy supplies that ensure future carbon budgets are met is the subject of many recent political, legislative and environmental debates.

In response to this challenge, the Health and Safety Executive will be hosting the inaugural Safety Excellence in Energy: The Future of Gas event.

The energy sector is rapidly changing as technologies across power, heat and transport continuously evolve to reduce carbon emissions.  Whilst the future of gas in this emerging low carbon energy system is starting to become clear but complex, three key themes that the UK needs to address are:

  • Transitioning to low carbon & decarbonised gas
  • Asset management and operability during the transition and beyond
  • The important role of Power to Gas

This event will bring together keynote speakers from industry, research, and standard making to focus on the technical challenges of ensuring that health and safety underpins and enables this technological change. HSE's technical specialists will share their expertise gained from working with industry to manage risks related to energy storage, integrating renewables, hydrogen, bio-syngas production from biomass and the safety aspects of introducing alternate gasses into the UK's gas grid.

Benefits of attending:

  • Hear the latest thinking from keynote speakers within industry and government
  • Learn about key challenges to the sector and how the energy sector is preparing to meet them
  • Understand the importance and challenges of technologies such as Power to Gas
  • Learn about the increasing diversity and complexity of the gas system and the steps being taken to understand, control and regulate it
  • Engage with, and learn from, others in the energy sector who are facing these challenges

Who should attend:

  • Directors of Gas suppliers, distributors, end users, equipment manufacturers and researchers
  • Energy sector representatives responsible for innovation, R&D, Health and Safety
  • Risk management professionals
  • Process Safety engineers
  • Senior Gas Engineers who will be affected by the impact of changes in the energy sector
