This cross-industry event is jointly hosted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Working Time Solutions (WTS). It will help you to develop your understanding of fatigue, share experiences of fatigue risk management, discuss challenges and create solutions.

HSE works with companies from across industry to assess fatigue risk and enable them to develop their own sensible fit for purpose fatigue risk management systems that promote healthier and safer working. HSE fatigue experts have a track record of contributing technical advice on shift work and management of working hours to inform HSE guidance, regulation, and investigation, which means that HSE has unique insight and technical expertise in this area. Working Time Solutions are shift pattern and roster management experts; using powerful software and specialist insight, they help organisations plan, schedule and manage shift patterns and rosters that boost productivity whilst supporting shift worker health, wellbeing and work-life balance.

Fatigue arising from poorly planned working shift arrangements or long working hours can lead to human error, ill health, injury and reduced productivity. It is estimated to cost the UK up to £240 million per year in terms of workplace accidents alone.

This event is aimed at people who have responsibility for defining a company's Safety Management System, monitoring fatigue, advising on occupational health or training relating to fatigue, or anyone in a HR, or an operational role responsible for roster design and workforce planning.

Event Delivery:

The event will be delivered by HSE fatigue experts who are specialists in the field of fatigue risk management and WTS specialists in shift pattern design and workforce management. Experts will draw upon their experiences of working with a variety of industries and organisational sizes both within the UK and globally. This event will also include case studies presented by organisations who have first-hand experience of addressing fatigue risks and an interactive workshop.

Julie Bell

Principal Scientist with over 20 years of experience in the field of Human Factors. As the HSL Technical Lead on Human Factors, she has a team with expertise in rail, process safety, oil and gas, petrochemical sectors and the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH). Her specialist areas are safety critical task analysis, human error identification and fatigue risk management.  Her opinion has been accepted in expert witness statements relating to major and/ or fatal accidents (e.g. Buncefield Storage Facility Explosion), the assessment of the human factors implications of shift work changes, the development of Fatigue Risk Assessment Guidelines for application by the Nuclear Inspectorate, and consultancy in management systems and fatigue risk assessment.  In collaboration with J.C. Williams, the originator of the method, Julie has updated the underpinning human error data for the Human Error Assessment and Reduction Technique (HEART, a well-established and highly regarded human reliability assessment method).

Martin Gee

Since graduating from Cambridge University as a Chartered Engineer, Martin has previously worked in a number of senior engineering and operations roles for a range of manufacturing companies such as Pilkingtons Glass Ltd, Hays Chemicals Distribution Ltd and Cussons UK Ltd. This has given him first-hand knowledge and experience of successful production operations and the labour issues surrounding working time. Martin understands the factors that need to be taken into account when embarking on a change programme from a client's and an employee's perspective, and the importance of systems to help manage and maintain new ways of working, ensure legislative compliance, deliver long term organisational and employee benefits. etc.Director at Working Time Solutions (WTS) with substantial experience and a proven track record in all aspects of achieving and implementing working time change. Since joining WTS in 2007, Martin has led a diverse range of projects with great success, and developed the Project Delivery / Consultancy provision. He currently heads up the Customer Services team at WTS, with a focus on building excellent customer relationships.

Martin had led a range of impressive projects during his time at WTS. Following the body of work he completed with Thames Water, they won HR Excellence Awards 2012 for the most successful change management programme. Martin has led and managed projects across a wide range of markets including Emergency Services, both Central and Local Government, Food Manufacturing and Utilities. Key clients include Thames Water, National Grid, United Utilities, Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Cheshire West & Chester Council.

Ceri will provide an overview of the successful trust-wide roster review of front-line emergency services that has ensured resources are better aligned to changes in demand created by the 'Ambulance Response Programme' (ARP). Alongside gains in performance, efficiency and patient care experience, Ceri will explain how efforts to support employee wellbeing have been significantly boosted by the roster review.
