HSL is to run a 2 day course on Control of Legionella Bacteria in water systems.

This is a two day course for those in control of premises and
those with health and safety responsibilities for others, to help
them comply with their legal duties in relation to
legionella. These include identifying and assessing sources
of risk, preparing a scheme to prevent or control risk,
implementing, managing and monitoring precautions, keeping records
of precautions and appointing a manager to be responsible for
others. The course will comprise a number of modules presented by a
combination of interactive theory, practical and workshop
The course will cover:
- The facts about the legionella organism and how it causes
- Lgionella detection methods
- An introduction to HSE's Approved Code of Practice and
- Wet cooling systems, associated plant and how the risk from
legionella can arise
- The risk arising from hot and cold water systems
- System monitoring and system disinfection
- The procedures involved during an outbreak of legionnaires
Who should attend?
This course applies and will appeal to anyone that needs to be
competent in the control of legionella water hygiene; this includes
the person carrying out regular checks right through to senior
managers. The course is suitable for engineers and managers
with responsibilities related to legionella control within their
buildings / factories / premises. It also well suited for
health and safety professionals responsible for developing or
undertaking legionella risk assessments.
Who will present the course?
The course will be presented by HSL scientists and HSE
operational regulators. The people involved with presenting
the course have a wealth of first hand microbiology and regulatory
experience relating to legionella. This experience covers
research microbiology in occupational health and safety and
inspection / investigation of water systems where there have been
operational failings e.g. outbreak investigations.
Practical sessions in HSL's microbiology laboratory facilities
will provide hands-on opportunity to understand and undertake
practical water management microbiology.
The course will be run at the HSL laboratory in the spa town of
Buxton. Buxton is in the heart of the Peak District and has good
links to mainline train stations and Manchester International
The cost of this course is £TBA per person, this includes course
notes, guidance book and lunch/refreshments.
