and Safety Laboratory, Harpur Hill, Buxton, Derbyshire on the

Date

and organisational levels;
• Legal aspects of work-related stress and HSEs enforcement
policy.
Introduction
Work-related stress is a major problem for businesses and
organisations across the UK. According to research commissioned
by the HSE, about half a million people in the UK experience work-related
stress and at a level that they believe is making them ill. In addition,
up to 5 million people in the UK feel their work is 'very' or 'extremely'
stressful, and in 2004/5 12.8 million working days were lost to
stress, depression or anxiety. Stress has also overtaken musculoskeletal
disorders as the biggest contributor to working days lost as a result
of work-related stress illnesses. This can have major impacts on
other elements of business such as productivity, organisational
image, health and safety and morale.
In 2004, HSE launched the Management Standards for stress, which
are a risk assessment approach to tackling and managing the risks
of work-related stress. HSL has been intensely involved with HSE
in developing and implementing this approach in organisations and
therefore is in a unique position to offer a course on this topic.
The standards reflect an organisational level approach. This helps
organisations to assess the risk of work-related stress in their
organisation and develop interventions, in consultation with their
staff, to minimise those risks. HSE are pursuing the implementation
of this approach in organisations, particularly focusing initially
on those in high-risk sectors for work-related stress sickness absence.
Using this approach will help meet legal obligations under the Health
and Safety at Work Act 1974 and minimise the implications of this
problem for businesses.
Who should attend?
This course is suitable for managers, health and safety or HR professionals
who will be in a position to apply this approach in their organisation.
What can you expect from this workshop?
This is a comprehensive course, which will consider the holistic
management of work-related stress. It will outline the key elements
of HSEs Management Standards for Stress and the tools associated
with the approach. It will provide guidance on how to use the approach
in your organisation and the opportunity to explore its practical
application.
The programme will include talks on the legal aspects; HSE's approach;
tackling stress at an organisational level; individual considerations
and demonstrations of the associated tools. Time has been allocated
for workshop sessions to look at issues associated with organisational
and individual level stress management, as well as an action planning
session to help take the approach forward in your organisation.
The cost of the course is £395 + VAT (includes course notes,
lunch, refreshments and a certificate of attendance).
