The course will be held at the Health and Safety Laboratory, Harpur Hill, Buxton, Derbyshire on the following date:

Date

Wednesday 25 February 2009

The course will cover:
• HSE’s risk assessment approach: HSE Management Standards for work related stress;
• Methodology of the Management Standards;
• Guidance on interventions for work-related stress at individual and organisational levels;
• Legal aspects of work-related stress and HSE’s enforcement policy.

Introduction
Work-related stress is a major problem for businesses and organisations across the UK. According to research commissioned by the HSE, about half a million people in the UK experience work-related stress and at a level that they believe is making them ill. In addition, up to 5 million people in the UK feel their work is 'very' or 'extremely' stressful, and in 2004/5 12.8 million working days were lost to stress, depression or anxiety. Stress has also overtaken musculoskeletal disorders as the biggest contributor to working days lost as a result of work-related stress illnesses. This can have major impacts on other elements of business such as productivity, organisational image, health and safety and morale.

In 2004, HSE launched the Management Standards for stress, which are a risk assessment approach to tackling and managing the risks of work-related stress. HSL has been intensely involved with HSE in developing and implementing this approach in organisations and therefore is in a unique position to offer a course on this topic. The standards reflect an organisational level approach. This helps organisations to assess the risk of work-related stress in their organisation and develop interventions, in consultation with their staff, to minimise those risks. HSE are pursuing the implementation of this approach in organisations, particularly focusing initially on those in high-risk sectors for work-related stress sickness absence. Using this approach will help meet legal obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and minimise the implications of this problem for businesses.

Who should attend?
This course is suitable for managers, health and safety or HR professionals who will be in a position to apply this approach in their organisation.
