Introduction
Lone working involves working without direct
supervision from others, and can encompass
many different ways of working, within a
number of different environments. The key
facet of lone working that increases the risk of
harm to the worker is the heightened
vulnerability of the individual as a result of
having no direct physical support from others
should harm arise. Lone working can therefore
present a very hazardous way of working.
A
large research study by HSL examined many
different types of lone workers and identified
important risks factors, which are explained
comprehensively during this training
programme. In order to minimise the risks to
lone workers, it is important that
organisations work to understand and
implement practical recommendations. By
doing so, negative impacts such as poor
psychological and physical health can be
avoided for the employee, and negative impacts
such as high staff turnover and compensation
claims can be avoided by the employer.
What can you expect?
An insight into the risks associated with lone
working, particularly violence. You will be
educated about: the different types of
lone working and their risks; the
consequences of exposure to risk at an
individual and organisational level; the legal
implications; effective preventative measures;
awareness about avoiding ineffective measures;
case study tasks and action planning. The course
aims not only to provide a sound understanding
of the important health and safety issues for
lone workers, but also increases delegates’ skills
in implementing the practical control measures
in order to tackle any risks within their
organisation. The issue of home-working will be
discussed as an illustrative case study for
understanding the intricacies involved in lone
working.
Who should attend?
This course has been designed for people with
management responsibilities for lone workers,
and lone workers themselves. It is also of
relevance to health and safety officers and HR
personnel who work in organisations where
lone working takes place.
