Introduction
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH) Regulations were first introduced in 1988. Since then they have been progressively modified to address emerging specific issues. These modifications have included the requirement for extra controls at processes such as fumigation, for example, or making an annual test of LEV mandatory.

More recently, however, the 2002 Regulations and 2003 and 2004 amendments have dramatically changed the priorities of the controls which have to be applied when exposures are possible.

So what’s changed?
While maintaining the basic requirement described in their title, recent amendments to the regulations have introduced a fundamental change in the philosophy of the controls. A hierarchy of controls are explicitly laid down in the regulations and employers are expected to implement them in full.

What will the course cover?
• Significant changes - a new order of priorities;
• What are controls?
• The importance of the hierarchy of controls;
• What tools are available to you?

Who should attend?
The course is designed for people with duties relating to CoSHH under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 who may have received their training before the more recent changes. This may include Safety Representatives in any company or managers of small or medium enterprises (SMEs).

It is expected that delegates will be familiar with the basic philosophy of the CoSHH Regulations and will already have a broad understanding of the duties of employers and employees and how CoSHH fits in with other legislation.

Presenters will include:
Andrew Easterbrook - Occupational Hygienist, HSL

Venue
The Course will be run at the new HSL laboratory in the spa town of Buxton. Buxton is in the heart of the Peak District and has good links to mainline train stations and Manchester international Airport.
