Training - BOHS - P401 Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM)

Book Now ButtonHSL is to run a two and a half day course on BOHS - P401 Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM)

This course will be held at the Health and Safety Laboratory, Harpur Hill, Buxton, Derbyshire on the following date:

Date
Tuesday 18 November - Thursday 20 November 2008

Introduction
Asbestos is one of the most highly regulated and one of the least understood areas of occupational hygiene practice in the UK. If we want to avoid more unnecessary deaths it is most important that we manage any work with asbestos in a safe way. One important component in any asbestos management programme is sampling and analysis. This may include bulk materials which may contain asbestos, or samples of the air that people may breathe.

We have organised this course to provide a general introduction to asbestos identification. It is our hope that at the end of this course you will have a better insight into the methodology associated with the identification of asbestos and a more detailed knowledge of the practical aspects of analysis. This is a practical subject and most of the course will involve hands-on microscope work. It would be helpful if attendees could bring their own PLM microscopes.

To be sure that you are sufficiently competent, you will need to spend a lot of time under supervision analysing samples. It is recommended that candidates should have at least two months experience before sitting the practical assessment part of this course.

At the end of the course there is a short multiple choice written examination and an extended practical examination that includes set-up and use of PLM and analysis of AIMS samples. Candidates that are successful in both parts of the examination are awarded the BOHS P401 Proficiency Module at an additional cost of £110+VAT.

What will the course cover?

  • Introduction to asbestos mineralogy and uses
  • Health effects of asbestos
  • Set up and use of the polarised light microscope
  • Analysis of asbestos-containing materials
  • Practical work
Who should attend?
