HSL is to run a 10 day course on Occupational Health Technician in Practice.
The course is delivered jointly by HSL and the University of Sheffield. Study will be on the
University Campus, and 3 days of study will be at HSL, Buxton.
1 - 5 November 2010, 6 - 10 December 2010
Overview of the course
This short programme is aimed at those practitioners with no
formal occupational health specialist qualification, but who
contribute to the delivery of occupational health and safety
services within an organisation. The programme aims to equip
students with the knowledge and skills to undertake basic
occupational health and safety tasks within a defined sphere of
competence dependent upon their backgrounds.
Suitable for
Practitioners working in occupational health and safety and / or
human resource teams within both the public and private sectors of
employment. Students from small/medium enterprises (SME´s) with no
formal occupational health provider would find this course
particularly valuable.
Expected outcomes of this programme
On completion of the programme, students will be competent to
undertake a range of activities either as a lone practitioner or as
part of the wider multi-disciplinary occupational health team,
including basic environmental risk assessments and routine health
screening functions.
Overview of content
The role and function of the Occupational health technician;
boundaries of practice; health and safety legislation; basic
environmental monitoring; routine health screening; records and
confidentiality related to role function; referral to appropriate
practitioner/agencies.

Formative portfolio.
