Explosion & Impact Physical Effects
HSL is to run a 2½ day course on Explosion & Impact Physical Effects.
This course will be held at the Health and Safety
Laboratory, Harpur Hill, Buxton, Derbyshire.
Please enquire: training@hsl.gov.uk
Introduction
The
effects of an accidental explosion can be devastating in terms of
loss of life, inventory, equipment and downtime. The aim of this
introductory course is to give a general overview and appreciation
of the physical effects of an explosion and projectile debris
generated by the explosion. This is a first step towards managing
the risks associated with explosion hazards and designing
protective measures to mitigate the effects. The course will cover
fundamental concepts and simplified methods to estimate damage and
injury caused by explosion and impact loading. Emphasis will be on
practical aspects such as experimentation, accident investigation
and providing sessions to analyse real data. A special feature will
be to conduct an explosion trial mid-way through the course.
Participants will be given the opportunity to make predictions
using the methods and knowledge gained, and compare their
predictions with actual field data. The material presented will
equip safety professionals with a better understanding of the
issues surrounding explosion and impact hazards in industry.
What will the course cover?
- Field trial with physical effects measurements;
- Lessons from past explosion incidents;
- Use of damage indicators in accident investigations to estimate
explosion overpressure at source;
- Simplified methods for predicting blast and impact loading and
structural response.
Who should attend?
Safety professionals and engineers interested in explosion
hazards and evaluation, and safety assessments throughout the
civil, mechanical, nuclear, transportation, petrochemical and
process industries.
Venue
The course will be run at the HSL laboratory in the spa town of
Buxton. Buxton is in the heart of the Peak District and has good
links to mainline train stations and Manchester International
Airport.
The cost of the course is £995 plus VAT per person (includes
course notes, lunches, dinner on the Tuesday night and all
refreshments).
