Construction Sector

With the second largest output in the EU, over two million workers and a 9% contribution towards the country's GDP, it goes without saying that construction in the UK is big business. Naturally, due to the nature of the work involved, health and safety is a massive concern to the industry as a whole; especially when you consider that in Britain over the last 25 years, over 2,800 workers have lost their lives on construction sites, with countless others suffering from work-related health problems.

Why choose HSL?

A safe, healthy workforce is a productive workforce; so investing in proper health and safety management doesn't just save lives - it saves money too. HSL can help you do just that, by:

  • Reducing hazards: Thanks to our extensive experience of managing occupational health hazards in the construction industry, we can help you ensure your plant is as efficient as it possibly can be.
  • Preventing incidents: Our experience of incident investigation - from train crashes to collapsed bridges - enables us to apply valuable knowledge and lessons to help prevent incidents in the construction industry.
  • Improving health: We can help you to meet legal requirements for employee care, taking into consideration the various challenges faced by the industry as a whole (e.g. a transient workforce, large supply chain and language barriers)
  • Improving staff wellbeing: Enhance your organisation's reputation for excellent employee care and health and safety practices.

How can we help?

Here at HSL, we tailor all our health and safety solutions to the individual needs of each client. This means we can:

  • Develop strategies, systems and policies for managing health and safety in your organisation, suggesting possible routes for specialist referral if required.
  • Provide mobile occupational health services, including screening for the construction industry's 'big five': noise-and vibration-related diseases, as well as skin, respiratory and musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Give advice on the design of flooring to reduce the likelihood of slips, trips and falls.
  • Interpret, manage and take important lessons from the data you collect after accidents (or near-miss incidents).
  • Offer bespoke health and safety training packages.
  • Give advice on fatigue in shift-workers, or those who do particularly high-risk jobs.
  • Run 'behavioural change' programmes designed to prevent accidents by raising workers' awareness and co-operation with safety initiatives
  • Visit you at your site to measure and analyse the ergonomic environment and suggest improvements if necessary.
  • Find ways of improving communication throughout your supply chain.
  • Assess levels of noise and vibration, as well as hazardous substances such as silica dust, wood dust, paint, adhesives and resins.
  • Assess and detect biohazards, including anthrax spores in brownfield sites.
  • Advise on any protective equipment needed for workers (and how to use it safely), as well as how you can conduct biological monitoring as a marker of efficiency.
