Band 5 Microbiologist

Location: Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL), Buxton, Derbyshire
Salary: Circa £17,500

The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) is an agency of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and is a unique multidisciplinary organisation with an international reputation as the UK’s leading health and safety facility. With a new purpose built laboratory, excellent technical facilities and highly qualified staff, HSL has a sound foundation for further growth.

Your role
To undertake laboratory analyses of samples using culture and molecular based methodology and, where required, develop analytical methodology. Provide a supporting role in workplace visits as part of a team undertaking environmental monitoring for biological agents, including preparation of equipment for monitoring work and active involvement in monitoring. Molecular based screening of samples for pathogens which will require work with Hazard Group 3 biological agents. The post will also require some weekend work on a rota basis. Handling of data derived from the above and preparation of analytical reports

Person requirements
You must have:

  • A background in microbiological sciences, such as a degree or equivalent in microbiology and practical experience in working in a microbiology laboratory
  • The ability to gather, analyse and report scientific data.
  • As workplace visits are required to undertake environmental monitoring for biological agents, the successful person will be expected to be able to provide a supporting role in such work.
  • You will need a full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK. However, HSE is willing to consider any proposals put forward by disabled applicants that allow them to do the job by any other means.

Developmental opportunities
The post offers the opportunity to develop a broad range of expertise in microbiological analytical techniques, including novel methods such as molecular based analysis. All staff are encouraged to publish data derived from project work and to present work at conferences, thereby creating the opportunity to establish a track record of achievement and recognition by scientific peers.
