Introduction

The hazards associated with asbestos and the possible very serious consequences to health are common knowledge. For those working with asbestos containing materials (ACMs) good controls need to be in use in order to keep the risk of exposure as low as possible. As well as carefully following recommended working practices, anyone who works with ACMs will need to wear RPE. Generally this will be a device which includes a tight fitting facepiece which will need to fit the wearer's face well to be effective. Fit testing is a means of assessing whether this facefit is acceptable or not. It is essential that fit testing is carried out correctly but evidence suggests that this is not always the case.

What is covered in this course?

Our course is aimed at improving the practical skills of those conducting fit testing of individuals who work with ACMs within the licensed asbestos industry. It will explain the importance of fit testing and concentrate on practical sessions covering the essential skills of quantitative fit testing using the Portacount:

  • pre-use checking and correct donning of facepieces
  • preparation of the facepiece for the Portacount fit test
  • corrrectly conducting the fit test
  • troubleshooting

The practical elements of the course will use the types and models of facepiece which are in common use in the licensed asbestos industry. The principles which will be conveyed are applicable to all makes and models of facepiece which may be suitable for use in the industry, and which the fit tester may be expected to fit test.

Who should attend?

Delegates will be expected to have experience in use of the Portacount and software and to bring along the Portacount and laptop with which they are familiar. It would be of benefit to delegates to also bring along fit testing accessory equipment, such as adaptors, as well as their own test facepieces. Delegates should also bring questions and difficulties from their own experience of fit testing. Additionally, delegates should have a basic working knowledge and understanding of RPE and the HSE guidance document on RPE, HSG 53. They should be conversant with the HSE guidance document on fit testing HSE 282/28.

Fit2Fit Accreditation

After completing this course and putting the learning into practice, some delegates may have sufficient knowledge and skills to be ready for Fit2Fit accreditation. Other delegates may require more knowledge, experience and training before reaching this level of competence, for which attendance at our Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) fit testing - Advanced course would be recommended

Venue

The course will be run at the HSL laboratory in the spa town of Buxton. Buxton is in the heart of the Peak District and has good links to mainline train stations and Manchester International Airport.
