Product Overview
Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is the most common way of
controlling exposure to airborne dust, fumes etc - substances that
can cause ill-health. It's there to protect people's health.
Unfortunately, all too often, it is poorly selected, designed,
applied and maintained, and doesn't protect people's health.
What's needed
is a better understanding of how to apply LEV by:
- Employers selecting, buying and running LEV
- Employees using LEV particularly at risk in their jobs
- Suppliers selling and designing LEV
- People assessing and examining LEV.
The LEV working demonstration model was developed by HSE
and HSL to help do just this for all four audiences. Together with
ground-breaking illustrative material the model has been central to
UK HSE Inspector LEV training, employer road-shows, LEV awareness
training courses and supplier events too. It's been an
essential feature of HSE's campaign, together with the new LEV
guidance, to improve LEV standards (See HSE LEV Website for details
www.hse.gov.uk/lev/index.htm). And, when used with the new HSE LEV
training material, it's a very powerful tool as users of the model
can testify;
"The model is ideally suited to classroom demonstration
and is readily transportable. It is both compact and flexible… and
an ideal complement to the LEV training materials produced by
HSE/HSL. These materials and videos came from extensive research
and provide groundbreaking insights into the role and application
of LEV." Roger Alesbury (BOHS President and BP Group Director,
Industrial Hygiene).
What you get
- A fully working model which demonstrates the essential design
and application features of LEV systems.
- A capability to show the key working principles of the three
common types of LEV hood
- A package of unique, groundbreaking complimentary illustrative
material
- Clear video instructions on assembly, and use
- Access to an 'owners network' to learn and swap lessons on
model use

Key Features
The LEV Working Demonstration Model allows you to;
- Show graphically the key principles of LEV design and
application using the working model and illustrative material
- Demonstrate the properties of the three common LEV hood types -
Capturing, enclosing and receiving
- Show how to design an LEV system from first principles
- Measure volume flow rate by Pitot traverse and orifice-plate,
and static pressure throughout the system, with pressure
tappings
- Demonstrate how common faults and lack of maintenance can
compromise the effectiveness of an LEV system, for instance, duct
blockage
Technical details
- The model can be set up to run one or two hoods
- The source to be controlled by the LEV, is a smoke generator.
The smoke cloud can be made directional using a small variable flow
fan. The 'smoke' is more of a mist. It doesn't easily set-off
smoke alarms
- Smoke visibility is enhanced with a low wattage halogen
lamp
For larger audiences
If the model is used for audiences greater than 5 it is
recommended you purchase the optional extra 'bullet' camera. This
allows images to be projected onto a screen so that everyone can
see the demonstration.
