Introduction

The combination of the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and HSL, with the involvement of all parties in highly regarded local networks, our establishment of a regional network of occupational health groups and our national/international contacts (e.g. WHO Collaborating Centre in Occupational Health status), afforded an opportunity to establish a multidisciplinary 'Centre for Workplace Health'. In doing so, we have moved the emphasis away from the academic discipline of Occupational Medicine to the partnership approach for Occupational Health delivery, which will help to achieve national targets set by UK Government.

The aims of the Centre are:

  • To use high quality research and development to develop simple practical solutions to workplace problems.
  • To increase the knowledge available to those who are active in the treatment, planning, prevention and legal process associated with workplace illness and injury such that the impact of this cause of ill health is minimised.
  • To offer value for money occupational health services that deliver measureable health improvements in workplaces.

In addition to these activities the Centre for Workplace Health coordinates the Group of Occupational Respiratory Disease Specialists (GORDS) network.
