A valued source of funding, and the opportunity to collaborate
with other laboratories across Europe, is provided to HSL through
European Union funded project work. This is awarded through
Framework Programmes, with the EU providing a fixed percentage of
funding and the participants having to find supplementary funding
to 'top up' the grants. To date all of the 'top up' funding
for HSL projects has been provided by HSE.
Framework Programme 6
HSL are currently consortium members of two integrated projects
related to nanomaterials and nanotechnology both funded through the
6th EU Framework Programme (FP6). These
are:
- NanoSafe2 Project
- NANOSH Project
Framework Programme 7
Calls for integrated projects to be funded under the 7th EU
Framework Programme (FP7) are currently being made. The
overall budget for FP7 is in excess of €50 billion, including a
budget of €3.5 billion set aside for projects relating to
'Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production
Technologies (NMP)' under Theme 4 of the Programme.
HSL and CiNR are actively participating in several FP7 as well
as FP6 projects. One project is a large EU-wide Coordination
Action, NanoImpactNet (NIN).
As well as attending workshops and other events held by NIN,
Rosemary Gibson of CiNR is organising a workshop to explore how the
occupational health effects of nanoparticles might be assessed.
This workshop will take place during NIN's conference in Lausanne,
Switzerland in March 2009.
