HSL has several centres of excellence, including:

• Centre for Workplace Health
  This centre was launched in 2005 and hosts the largest group of occupational health specialists in the UK delivering high quality research, training and occupational health services.
• Centre for Interdisciplinary NanoResearch (CiNR)
  CiNR brings together a wide range of health and safety research capabilities based at HSL, with the specific aim of applying them to the field of nanomaterials and nanotechnology.
• Proficiency Testing
  HSL operates several proficiency testing schemes in support of workplace and environmental risk assessments.
• Explosives Notified Body (ENB)
  The GB Explosives Notified Body offers an independent, specialised technical service in the assessment and certification (CE-marking) of explosives within the scope of the European Directive 93/15/EEC (the Civil Uses Directive).
