Capabilities -
Fire, Explosion & Process Safety
Bringing
together expertise in estimating and evaluating risks to people and
the environment arising from hazardous activities and industrial processes.
We provide a comprehensive service to identify fire, explosion and
process hazards, assess their consequences and advise on their control.
Case Studies
Our fire, explosion and process safety capability
encompasses:
- Explosive, explosible, flammable and energetic materials.
- Exothermic reactions. Calorimetric, laboratory and large scale
experimental facilities are available for the study of runaway
reactions.
- Gas and dust explosions in confined
and unconfined spaces. Small and large scale experimental facilities
are available.
- Ignition sources and their means of control.
- Fire behaviour. Facilities are available for the study of fires
in confined spaces such as tunnels and warehouses.
- Fire and explosion prevention and protection devices and systems.
Industrial scale experimental facilities are available.
- Modelling of fire and explosions using computational approaches,
including computational fluid dynamics
(CFD). Model evaluation and validation.
- Modelling the behaviour and consequences of large scale releases
of flammable and toxic substances.
- Assessment of hazards from high pressure systems.
- Assessment of consequent models, including CFD, in safety cases.
- Testing and certification, advising on technical developments,
including UN-related testing and ATEX Directive testing.
- European certification work - the GB Explosives
Notified Body (ENB).
