Specialist Scientific Facilities
- Anechoic Chamber
This facility is used for a wide variety of noise-related research
and investigative work ranging from development and assessment of
hearing protectors to the validation of noise measurement techniques.
Features
• Internal
free-space of 4 x 4 x 4 metres.
• Removable acoustic wedges covering the floor, or part of
the floor, allowing measurements under either full anechoic conditions
or over an acoustically reflective plane.
• Anechoic conditions at 125Hz and above.
• Double-door access for large equipment.
• 110V, 240V two-phase and 440V three-phase electrical supplies.
• Compressed air at 90psi and breathable air supplies.
• External facilities for electrical measurement and control
signals.
Applications
• Developing
standardised methods for testing the noise attenuation of hearing
protectors.
• Developing and validating measurement techniques for the
assessment of noise exposure.
• Assessing noise emission from powered hand-tools.
• Assessing specific headset devices and measuring headset
noise exposure.
• Evaluating prediction methods for the attenuation provided
to impulsive noise.
• Evaluating measurement methods for call-centre operators'
noise exposure.
