Dr Garry Burdett is an internationally recognised specialist in
fibre/asbestos sampling and analysis, and has authored numerous
reports and papers relating to the assessment of environmental
Garry has worked extensively on international committees dealing
with asbestos for organisations such as the World Health Organisation, the
International Programme on Chemical
Safety and the International Standards Organisation. He
is currently the chair of HSE's
Committee of Fibre Measurement.
Garry is a nominated analyst for a number of UKAS-accredited
asbestos analysis methods based on scanning and transmission
electron microscopy, including the TEM analysis of lung tissue
samples. He has been involved in the development of various methods
and strategies for asbestos monitoring, ranging from the
contamination of pharmaceutical drugs to the assessment of asbestos
contaminated land and releases from waste sites.
Garry's current research interests include:
- measurement of asbestos body burdens amongst asbestos removal
- assessment of the potential risk of new fibres and airborne
asbestos releases during the removal and demolition of asbestos
- methods for monitoring of asbestos in bulk substances
- development of standard reference materials for asbestos in lung
